Understanding Contract Signing Order

Understand the difference between pre-signing and post-signing contracts and how to set the right signing order.

When creating a contract, you can choose when you (the vendor) sign the contract in relation to your client. This setting helps control the signing flow and ensures the contract is executed in the order that best fits your workflow.

You have two options:

  • Sign before the client (Pre-sign)

  • Sign after the client (Post-sign)

📍 Where to Find This Setting

During contract creation, you’ll see the following options:

  • Countersign the contract yourself (toggle)

  • Would you like to sign before or after the client?

    • Before

    • After

✍️ Option 1: Sign Before the Client (Pre-sign)

If you choose Before, you will sign the contract before sending it to your client.

How it works:

  1. You create the contract

  2. You sign the contract first

  3. The contract is then sent to your client

  4. Your client reviews and signs

When to use this:

  • When you want to approve and finalize the contract first

  • When your signature is required to validate the agreement before client review

  • When you want to speed up the client’s signing process

💡 Tip: Pre-signing helps reduce back-and-forth and can speed up contract completion.

🕒 Option 2: Sign After the Client (Post-sign)

If you choose After, you will sign the contract only after your client has signed it.

How it works:

  1. You create the contract

  2. The contract is sent to your client

  3. Your client signs first

  4. You receive the signed contract and countersign

When to use this:

  • When you want to review the client’s signed agreement before finalizing

  • When your signature acts as a final confirmation

  • When internal approval is needed after client agreement

💡 Tip: Post-signing is ideal when you need a final review step before making the contract fully executed.

⚠️ Key Things to Remember

  • Enabling "Countersign the contract yourself" allows you to participate in the signing process

  • Choosing Before makes you the first signer

  • Choosing After makes you the final signer

  • The signing order cannot be changed once the contract is sent

💡 Best Practice

Choose a signing order that aligns with your business process:

  • Use Pre-sign for faster execution and upfront approval

  • Use Post-sign for added review and final confirmation
