Understanding Question Formats

Learn about the available question formats and how to choose the right one when building questionnaires to collect accurate and organized client responses.

When creating a questionnaire, you have the flexibility to add your own custom questions based on the information you want to collect from your clients. As you build your questionnaire, each question you add will require you to choose a question format.

🧩 Available Question Formats

When you want to add questions to your questionnaire, these are the formats you can choose from.

✏️ Short Text

Use the Short Text format for brief, one-line responses. This format is ideal for collecting basic information such as:

  • First name

  • Last name

  • Email address

  • Phone number

  • Company name

  • Social media handle

Choose this option whenever you expect a short answer rather than a detailed explanation.

📝 Long Text

Use the Long Text format when clients need more space to provide detailed responses. This format works well for questions such as:

  • Tell us about your event.

  • What are your goals for this project?

  • Do you have any special requests or requirements?

  • Is there anything else you'd like us to know?

Long Text gives clients the flexibility to provide thoughtful, detailed answers.

📂 Dropdown List

A Dropdown List allows clients to choose one option from a predefined list. This is a great choice when you have several options but only one can be selected.

Common examples include:

  • Event type

  • Service package

  • Venue

  • Preferred communication method

Using a dropdown keeps questionnaires clean and consistent, especially when there are many available options.

🔘 Single Choice

The Single Choice format allows clients to select one answer from multiple options displayed on the screen. This format is ideal for simple questions where only one answer is allowed, such as:

  • Yes or No

  • Indoor or Outdoor

  • Morning or Evening

  • Preferred contact method

Because all options are visible, it's a good choice when there are only a few possible answers.

✔️ Multiple Choice

The Multiple Choice format allows clients to select more than one answer. Use this format when multiple selections are acceptable.

Examples include:

  • Which services are you interested in?

  • Select all communication methods you prefer.

  • Which add-ons would you like to include?

This option is commonly used for "Select all that apply" questions.

📅 Date

The Date question lets clients choose a date using a calendar picker. This helps ensure dates are entered in a consistent format.

Common uses include:

  • Event date

  • Wedding date

  • Appointment date

  • Project deadline

  • Preferred consultation date

Using the date picker reduces conflict with scheduling.

🔢 Number

Use the Number format whenever you only want to accept numeric responses. This is useful for collecting information such as:

  • Guest count

  • Budget

  • Number of attendees

  • Quantity

  • Age

  • Years of experience

Since this field only accepts numbers, it helps give direct to the point answers.

💡 Tips for Choosing the Right Question Format

Selecting the appropriate question type improves both the client experience and the quality of the information you receive.

Keep these best practices in mind:

  • Use Short Text for brief, one-line answers.

  • Use Long Text when clients need space to provide detailed information.

  • Use Dropdown Lists for long lists of predefined options.

  • Use Single Choice when only one answer should be selected.

  • Use Multiple Choice when clients can select more than one option.

  • Use Date whenever you're collecting dates to ensure consistent formatting.

  • Use Number for responses that should only contain numeric values.
