How W-9 and 1099 verification works

Learn how W-9 verification and 1099-NEC filing works in Maroo so you can complete contractor tax forms accurately, securely, and on time.

Sending W-9 Reminders to Contractors

Keeping W-9s up to date is the first step toward smooth and timely 1099 filing. With Maroo, you can remind contractors quickly and securely.

You can:

  • Send a mass reminder to all contractors at once

  • Allow contractors to submit or update their W-9 securely through Maroo

  • Track submission status directly from your dashboard

Once a contractor submits their W-9, you’ll be ready to move forward with verification and filing.

⚠️ Important Note:
Contractors must complete and verify their W-9 before you can file a 1099-NEC. Completing this step early helps prevent delays and keeps your filing process on schedule.

Verifying W-9s and Filing 1099-NEC Forms

After a contractor submits their W-9, Maroo guides you through the remaining steps to complete your tax filing.

You can:

  • Verify the W-9 directly with the IRS

  • Wait for verification to complete (this may take a few minutes up to 48 hours)

  • File the 1099-NEC with the IRS directly through Maroo

Once filed, all W-9 and 1099 documents are securely stored in your account for easy access and future recordkeeping.

⚠️ Important Note:
Please encourage contractors to enter accurate and complete information on their W-9 forms. Correct information helps ensure the IRS accepts the filing the first time and avoids delays, rejections, or resubmissions.
