How long do refunds take?

We’re here to explain how refunds work, how long they usually take, and what to expect along the way.

Refund Timelines and What to Expect

Refund timelines vary depending on the payment method used. Below is a breakdown of how ACH and card refunds work, how long they typically take, and what to do if a refund hasn’t appeared yet.

ACH Refunds

ACH refunds are designed to be safe, reliable, and accurate. In most cases, refunds appear in the recipient’s bank account within 3–5 business days.

Here’s what happens during that time:

  • Once the refund is approved, the merchant initiates the ACH refund transaction

  • The transaction is submitted during the next available processing window, based on standard business hours and batch schedules

  • The refund moves through the ACH network, which processes payments in organized business-day batches

  • Weekends and bank holidays may slightly extend processing time

After the ACH network processes the refund:

  • The sending bank confirms and releases the funds

  • The recipient’s bank completes the process and posts the refund to the account

Because ACH refunds pass through multiple checkpoints to protect against errors and fraud, processing may occasionally take longer than expected. Each step is part of a careful system designed to ensure your funds are delivered securely and correctly.

Card Refunds

Card refunds typically take 5–10 business days to appear on a customer’s statement.

You can check the status of a specific refund at any time from:

  • The Transaction page

  • The Payments tab in your Dashboard

Why a card refund may not appear within 10 business days

In some cases, a refund may not show as a separate line item on the customer’s statement. Common reasons include:

  • Reversal
If the refund is issued shortly after the original charge, the charge may disappear from the statement entirely, as if it never occurred.

  • Partial reversal
A partial refund issued soon after the original charge may reduce the original charge amount instead of appearing as a separate refund.

  • Refund pending
The refund may still be processing due to the customer’s bank or because the account has insufficient funds. You can hover over the Refund Pending status in the Dashboard to see the reason and learn how to resolve it.

Still Not Seeing the Refund?

If the customer still sees the original charge after 10 business days and there is no credit or reversal, they should contact their bank for further assistance.

For card refunds, you can provide the bank with the transaction ARN or STAN, which helps them locate and trace the refund more quickly.
